The second question is easy to answer, no, you won't save money, but you will get exactly what you want. The best way to start tying your own flies is to buy a kit. These range from basic to elaborate, but have the advantage of a starting point where you have the right materials and can tie your first flies. Starting at the bottom we have a Starter Fly Tying Kit (How-to Book, Tools & Materials) that allows you to tie a good number of different flies. The only extra you need is a vice and you can choose between various model in the R300 to R3000 range. So you are looking at R800-R1000 to start. Next up is a more elaborate kit, the Premium Kit plus the Vice of your choice. Then the Pinnacle Kit which has everything, a vice, and even a very smart plastc container with lids & drawers. This is what I wish I had when I started tying. Piles of materials and the value is excellent, to buy the items on their own will cost a lot more. Also available are various tool kits which include a Vice and tools, starting at R199 upwards. The quality of the tools in these kits are often questioned, and whiole they are not suspect they are produced cheaply in huge volumes, so its likely that youwill replace some of them later, and buy other tools not included. Classes are held for beginners (and experts), so keep any eye on the website for dates & venues.
