021 551 4248 sales@streamx.co.za

Dear [fname]

This month is bereft of stories, tips or anecdotes as I would like to draw you attention to two items, and don't want to distract you with anything else.

1. Ed Herbst DVD
Ed Herbst and Andrew Ingram have produced a brilliant DVD chronicling unique South African Flies. Featuring flies such as the RAB and the Caribou spider, which are where possible tied by their originator. The big names of SA fly tying all feature, but don't be put off if you are not a fly tyer [fname]. This is a DVD of great historical significance for the South African fly angler and is not only about fly tying but the history behind the flies that we fish so often. The footage for the next DVD in the series (which concentrates on terrestials) is already in the can, so that is something to look forward to towards the end of the year.

2. Game Fair - The Hunting & Fishing Outdoor Show - Dullstroom Bird of Prey Center - 30th - 31st July - 9am to 5pm
Pencil this into your diary now, there is plenty for the fly fisherman including a big collection of SA's best fly casting instructors, guides, fly tyers and destination providers. StreamX will be there, showing the Tenkara rods from Sakura and the Netbooks side of teh business will be showing the latest fly fishing titles and DVD's. See you there [fname], it will be nice to meet you.

Tying Tip of the Month

Dealing with 'wrapping' zonker tails

streamer tip

There are many ways of dealing with the problem of zonker tails that 'wrap' during the cast, but I like this simple method by Capt. Tim Tannis.
He uses a piece of plastic tube, cuts it halfway through the middle, then cuts from the end to take a slot out of it.
Instead of a tube I used a goose quill and it worked quite well.
Tie the zonker strip onto the hook, then slip the tube over the zonker tail with the cut out facing the hook.

streamer tip

Wrap the slotted end onto the hook as shown after adding some glue.

streamer tip

Continue with the rest of the fly, hiding the tube.

Fly of the Month

A.K. Best's 'Big Brown' Coq de Leon Matuka

Once again we have a fly that uses up some of those feathers that usually get left on the cape with no purpose in sight.
Those long webby hackles at the bottom of your Coq de Leon patch are ideal.

This pattern  featured  in the  Nov/Dec 2007 edition of  Fly Rod & Reel Magazine

DVD & Book of the Month

South african fly tying journey

A South African Fly Tying Journey with Ed Herbst and Friends
Ed Herbst & Andrew Ingram DVD PAL 80 mins R199.00
Ed Herbst and Andrew Ingram's first DVD on South African fly tying and fly fishing focuses on the evolution of tackle, tactics and fly patterns which has seen us move from four weights in the seventies, to the Orvis Ultrafine 2-weight in the early eighties and now to the latest Sage Triple 000 and from a period when #14 flies were considered small to our current micro-patterns.
Herbst and Ingram have included Tom Sutcliffe, Dean Riphagen, Fred Steynberg and of course Ed Herbst as the tyers of classic South African dry flies. You will see them tying and fishing the Caribou spider, RAB, Xmas Xaddis, G&B Low Floater and Shuck Emerger ... as they tell the story in their own words. This DVD will be followed by another on terrestrials towards the end of the year. Buy Online

Beyond Catch & Release

Paul Guernsey Hardcover, 144 pages R195.00
A clear and brilliant look at the ethics of fly fishing and what we must do to ensure the survival of the tradition. Will fly fishing survive the twenty-first century? Author and angler Paul Guernsey argues that angling and the natural resources it depends upon clear rivers, unpolluted oceans, and much more are threatened by a host of increasingly complex social and environmental factors. Tradition, conservation of land and water, a foresighted ethic, concerns for the sport of other anglers, a commitment to the next generation, and much more these are at the heart of Guernsey's explorations in this path-breaking book. In Beyond Catch & Release he draws a road map into the future for the sport of fly fishing and all those who love it. twenty full-color photographs.   Buy Online
